TO BE OR NOT TO BE


You’re definitely familiar with Shakespeare’s famous quote.  Are you familiar with the different forms and uses of the verb to be?  Let’s go!


TO BE


As you know well, the verb “to be” is the most used verb in English.  It is the first verb we learn in English as it is the ultimate state verb!  It is what we need to use in order to express existence!  In this case, English is easier than Spanish as we have just this verb instead of the two state verbs of “ser” and “estar”.


  • The verb is conjugated in the present: am / is / are

  • In the past: was / were

  • The infinitive: to be

  • The present participle: being

  • The past participle: been

 

Some uses:


We need the verb “to be” in these continuous tenses:


  • We are learning English.

  • We were walking in the park when it started to rain.

  • You will be living in Paris next year.

  • I have been studying Greek.


It is used to form the passive voice:


  • The bridge was built in 1892.

  • Olive oil is produced in the southern region of Spain.

  • My car was stolen last night.

 

It can also be used as a modal verb to express futurity or obligation:


  • The train was to leave at 6.  (meaning:  The train was supposed to leave at 6.)

  • I am to work in Barcelona next month.  (meaning:  I am going to work in Barcelona next month.)
