¡La D es de DO!

En inglés hay muchos verbos "importantes". Verbos que no solo tienen su propio significado, sino que también funcionan como verbos auxiliares. El tema de hoy va a ser el verbo "DO".

¡El verbo "DO" tiene un superpoder! Es a la vez un verbo principal (con el significado de "realizar o llevar a cabo") y un verbo auxiliar. Entender ambos usos es la clave para hablar inglés con confianza.

Las diferentes formas de DO

DO se define en el diccionario como: llevar a cabo / realizar. Como bien puedes imaginar, ¡es muy irregular!

• do I, you, we, they (presente) I do my homework.

• does he, she, it (presente) She does yoga.

• did Todos los sujetos (pasado) We did it!

• done Participio pasado It's done.

• doing Presente continuo What are you doing?

DO como auxiliar

Cuando empezamos a aprender inglés, enseguida aprendemos que para formar oraciones negativas y hacer preguntas en presente necesitamos usar "DO" como auxiliar.

El auxiliar nos va a indicar el sujeto (tercera persona del singular) así como el tiempo verbal (presente o pasado).

En negativas:

• I don't like coffee. do not → don't

• He doesn't work here. does not → doesn't

• We didn't see the movie. did not → didn't

Preguntas:

• Do you speak English? Presente I / you / we / they

• Does she live in Madrid? Presente he / she / it

• Did they finish the project? Pasado todos los sujetos

Colocaciones frecuentes de DO

Aunque "do" y "make" se traducen al español como "hacer", sus diferencias radican principalmente en la forma en que se combinan estos verbos.

Aquí tienes algunas colocaciones muy comunes con "DO":

• Do business hacer negocios

• Do work trabajar

• Do homework hacer los deberes

• Do the housework hacer las tareas del hogar

  • Do the cooking cocinar

  • Do the cleaning limpiar

El verbo DO puede parecer pequeño, pero está absolutamente en todas partes en inglés. Desde hacer preguntas y formar negaciones, hasta hablar de las tareas cotidianas, o añadir énfasis cuando de verdad quieres decir algo — ¡DO trabaja muchísimo!

La buena noticia es que una vez que entiendes sus dos funciones principales — auxiliar y verbo principal — todo empieza a encajar. Así que no solo lo estudies, úsalo.
